Jess' Review of Solar Miracle Make-Up

Tone/Mood: It’s fast-paced and has the dance beat required to fit where it’s placed, along with convenient beats to emphasise particular moments. Whereas it’s upbeat, it can’t be described to be as perky as some of the other myu songs. It has a different energy and the specific sections for certain actions almost rule it out as a song to spontaneously break into.

Placement: It’s generally used pre-battle or as a battle song. It really only works where they’ve placed it, and, though it’s upbeat, it wouldn’t do just as a filler song. It does grab your attention and basically state that the big battle is coming up/going on.

Memorable: I only find it particularly memorable because a video clip of this song being performed was the first clip I ever saw of the musicals. It’s short, snappy and relatively easy to memorise, but because it’s so short and is generally quite repetitive in rhythm, it’s also rather easy to forget.

Lyrics:

Sailor Beauty,

in the solar system invincible if assembled together,

solar miracle make-up

I do like those lyrics in particular, but I find the melody they're set to insanely irritating. It makes them sound rather stupid.

Jess' Review of La Soldier

Tone/Mood: This was one of the first songs I heard from Sera Myu and I admit to thinking, “why the heck is this so perky?”, but, on reflection, it isn’t as perky as a lot of the other Myu songs. It has a nice, positive, vibe to it and doesn’t require much attention to listen to and be cheered up a little.

Placement: I only remember this song ever being at curtain calls, though I know it’s been used before and in battle sequences. I tend to associate it as more of an image song for the shows in general, more ‘out of character’ than ‘in character’, however.

Memorable: I got my domain name from this song, so that probably says a lot about whether I believe it’s memorable or not. In general, this is the song I associate with Sera Myu.

Lyrics:

From you comes love's moon light
I bask in it and am transformed
Brilliantly, secretly, La Soldier

Simple, but effective. There’s almost nothing subtle about those lines, but they work incredibly well anyway. They just sum up what storyline, what happens, the mission, what goes on, in a few simple lines without making it dull and stating the obvious.

Jess' Review of Sakura Fubuki

Tone/Mood: Slow compared to a great deal of the songs from PGSM, and with no extremes of particularly high or low octaves, the song lends itself to being something to relax to or as something to have on in the background that you don’t have to concentrate a great deal on. It’s gentle and has a kind of, “well, that’s life” mood to it.

Placement: I honestly don’t really understand why they made Rei sing this actually in the show. It works well enough as an image song, but I think her having sung it somehow takes away from the track. Perhaps that’s because I never saw PGSM Rei as someone who would stand up and sing. It would have been better in the more emotionally intense moments for the character.

Memorable: I find it memorable for certain lines in the lyrics and because of its general tone. You can take whatever you want from this song and it isn’t demanding a response. I’ve only ever found a couple of songs that are capable of that. I don’t find it memorable for anything relating to the show, however.

Lyrics:

There’s no such thing as god

But I want to believe in something.

I adore those lines. I think there’s something in them that everyone can relate to on some level. They’re the main reason I love this song. They fit the longing tone of the track perfectly.

Jess' Review of Rashiku Ikimasho

Tone/Mood: I suspect this is supposed to be perky, but I find it empty. Maybe it's the lack of any real base to the track. It doesn't really have an impact on me at all. It's background noise. I can imagine this song being very aggravating if you're in a bad mood.

Placement: I admit to never watching the anime, but the song seems to have the same elements that most outro songs of various other animes includes. I can see it breaking the tension of a cliff-hanger or the like.

Memorable: I’ve never heard this track before and I don’t think I’ll be playing it with any great frequency any time soon. Nothing in particular leaps out to grab your attention, though I suspect it is a memorable track if you watch/have watched the anime.

Lyrics:

He looks like my old flame, it's love at first sight
Now my head is spinning, I don't want to get hurt
.

I don’t like the lyrics. They don’t make a lot of sense and sound downright silly, to be honest. The two lines above describe the storyline and I suppose they do lend more coherency to the track.

Jess' Review of Unmei wa Utsukushiku

Tone/Mood: The opening is so lovely that I half-wish this track was just instrumental. It’s gentle, soothing and relaxing. However, though it’s gentle and mostly soft, it does demand your attention in some form. It’s not merely background music. I could fall asleep to this, though, and that’s not a bad thing.

Placement: As an image song, it works well. It fits the view I have of Neptune. Anything with a faster tempo or more prominent beats would seem somehow inappropriate. This should have been used in Neptune character-moments, and I don’t quite understand why it wasn’t.

Memorable: Having not heard the song before, I can’t find it memorable yet. I think it would have been more memorable for those familiar with the song if it had been used well in the anime. I’ll most likely find it memorable for the pleasant surprise of the opening bars of music.

Lyrics:

This fate so beautifully
Brings out the sparkles
In my tears

The lyrics are quite beautiful as a whole, but I love the above simply for the picture they paint.

Jess' Review of Friend

Tone/Mood: It's upbeat and catchy, but the opening bars make me cringe because it makes a person think that the whole song is going to be the same if you don't give it a chance. It's not something to dance around to, but it's a song that will make you smile and lift your mood.

Placement: Used at the very end of the show, if I remember correctly. I'm not sure why they didn't use it before, though I suppose since the girls weren't exactly all together and all friends until that moment, it fits.

Memorable: I think it's memorable as a general theme to PGSM, as an overview of the show. And, if not for that, for the possibility of it making people think of their own friends.

Lyrics:

I was smiling, shy of
This thing called friendship
Thanks for giving me
This wonderful dream

Okay, so the lyrics are overly sappy, but there's a meaning behind them. If I had to take something from this song to say to my friends, it's those lines.

Jess' Review of Double Moonlight Romance

Tone/Mood: I don't really get anything from this song, but it has a pleasing melody. It doesn't really provoke a response, and perhaps I'm just rather impatient, because I would have turned the song off before the long intro had finished.

Placement: It works in its context and storyline wise and I guess it would be a decent song to break a person gently into Sera Myu if it was the first show they saw.

Memorable: I don't find it particularly memorable; I only realized why it sounded familiar halfway through and that was simply because of a section that aggravated me.

Lyrics:

This is our fate, it hasn't begun yet
Our connection in the past and in the future
Will repeat over and over, a Moonlight Romance

Exposition and plot-line summing up, like many of the lyrics to sailor moon songs, but not overkill.

Jess' Review of Moon Revenge

Tone/Mood: There's a certain strength and determination behind the song; if you're not doing something productive when you hear it, it makes you think you should do something! It's reasonably paced and quite upbeat without being irritating.

Placement: Definitely fits where it was placed and especially as a positive outro song.

Memorable: I hadn't heard the song before now, but I think it may end up on repeat for a while. I suppose that makes it memorable!

Lyrics:

If you wish for it, come chase me
That kiss leaves a red tattoo
An engraving of destiny, that tattoo

I love that imagery, because the image and the feeling behind it can be taken as gentle or painful.

Jess' Review of Ai no Senshi

Tone/Mood: There's a positive beat to it without forcing a happy, hyper tune down your throat at the same time. It strikes quite a nice balance - it catches your attention, but doesn't distract. Whilst being a reasonably strong song, it's also quite gentle.

Placement: It sounds like it should be a battle song, so it seems it was well-placed.

Memorable: It sounds as if it could be a memorable song more for its placement that the actual quality of the track. It's a nice song, but there's something not quite up to scratch: I think it's the lack of a decent base at some points.

Lyrics:

Well we'll just do it ourselves won't we
We'll show them the pure hearts of girls
No matter what, we'll do our best

Whilst I assume those lyrics in particular are supposed to be positive, I like them purely for the frustrated, possibly sarcastic aspect. The first of the above lines certainly sounds like something my friends and I have said on occasion.

Jess' Review of Amazon Kara Circus ga Yatte Kita

Tone/Mood: The first thing I thought of when this track started was of a really bad, low-budget advert. It then progressed to some sort of children's programme. I suppose in its context, it must be a toe-tapping track, but otherwise...

Placement: It's necessary for plot and it works well as exposition, so its placement was well thought-out.

Memorable: I would rather forget, to be honest. If you're a person who loves the villains, however, then I presume it must be memorable.

Lyrics:

Overflowing with light, the dreams in this town

Well, at least that sums up a plot point.
