Miri's review of "Rashiku" Ikimasho

Tone/Mood: Upbeat and happy! This song makes you feel like you can do anything. Well actually, in my case it makes me feel like I can go outside and turn cartwheels while belting the lyrics out to the sky. I don't know if my sentiments can be shared by the everyday listener, but whenever you need some lighthearted inspiration, "Rashiku" Ikimasho provides!

Placement:
One of the first ending songs that weren't lyrical and had chorus harmonizing in the background, hehe. Definitely the most upbeat of all BSSM endings (Otome no Policy is close but not quiet), and very appropriate for SuperS, which held motifs of childhood (focus on Chibiusa and children's dreams).

Memorable:
I actually first heard "Rashiku" Ikimasho as the Cantonese dubbed version. At the time, I was about 8 or so and I was watching these Cantonese children's karaoke DVDs and stumbled upon some really catch that began "never give up, always stick it out until the end" or something to that extent, and after a few listens, I kept on coming back to it over and over. There was something in the lyrics and upbeat music that made me really inspired. Later, when I found out it was actually a BSSM song (no SuperS on TV in the US at that time), I was really excited. It was track 11 of the very first CD that I burned by myself, and I swear out of all the songs on that CD, Rashiku was the one I listened to most.

Lyrics:
My favourite line out of all the BSSM songs:
It's OK to re-write it
Your loving profile

It just expresses such a sense of inspiration, as if we can do everything over again because we're young and have a promising future.

Overall Rating:

I'm giving this song a five~! One of my favourite themes from BSSM and will continue to be!

Miri reviews La Soldier

Tone/Mood: Just look at the title - "the soldier". That is enough to indicate what kind of amazing song this is. The immense amounts of chorus in the song make it something awe-inducing. I haven't attended a Myu yet in my lifetime, but I -have- attended/participated in musicals and I can assure you, when you have that many people singing all together about something passionate and emotional, you feel almost swallowed up by the music and engulfed in the moment. La Soldier is one of the Myu songs that brings that specific feeling into my mind, and is probably why it continues to show up in all the Myu's to date (besides the fact that it technically -is- the Myu theme!)

Placement: Epic battle song calls for placement in epic battles, which means it's mostly used in battle scenes in Myu. It's rather unfortunate that there wasn't as much La Soldier as there could have been in the anime BSSM series. It would have fit quite well into any of the large team battles against lesser bosses.

Memorable: Definitely~! Once you hear it, La Soldier is very hard to forget because of how unique it sounds from the BSSM/PGSM and even the Myu songs. Instead of many solos and character motifs, La Soldier expands to fit any group of the senshi, be it just Usagi and her Inners or the entire team. This flexibility allows it to be reused over and over in the Myus with great success.

Lyrics:
Continuing this way hurts but
With a smile we exchange goodbyes, no promises that
We'll meet again tomorrow
It's been 200 years but the same fate has come to meet us

Can you say "epic"?

Overall Rating:

5 stars, hands down. Who can resist a freaking awesome song like this? It's got all the elements that just scream "epic battle song", and the blending the chorus - no matter what the version - is truly a treat for the ears.

Miri's review of Solar Miracle Make-Up

Tone/Mood: I for one do not understand the amount of dislike garnered towards this song. It's upbeat, though not epic like La Moon or La Soldier, and seems to be very fitting as a "come on girls, let's do this!" type of song. Whenever I hear it, I feel riled up enough to sing along, feeling as if I'm really part of something great, haha. Unfortunately, all the group singing in the song seems to detract from it. Perhaps if there were more duets instead of the entire group singing straight through, it would have more of an impact.

Placement: Standard pre-battle song in Myu, not much to say here. Wouldn't really have been appropriate in BSSM, although I could see it used in PGSM. Ah well, either way, it's fitting for where it's placed!

Memorable: It's a very short song, which makes it quite easy to memorize and sing. The most memorable line, of course, would be the refrain of "Solar miracle, make up!" (hence the title) It's also a very easy song to identify, I suppose. Whenever I hear Usagi sing out that first "GARASU no ringu!", I immediately, almost subconsciously, prepare myself for the moment where I can belt out with the other senshi that call of "Solar miracle make up!"

Lyrics:

In a flash of lightning it becomes a staircase
The sailor soldiers will take to the sky
We'll perform in the universe's ocean
Moon story spectacle

I absolutely -love- the lyrics to this song. There's a lot of Engrish usage in it, but it seems to almost enhance the sharpness of the song. Lots of lush imagery that just brings to mind pretty lights and shiny attacks.

Overall rating:

It was my first Myu song ever, actually, so how can I give it less than a 4? Hehe. Falls slightly short of a 5 because it's really not that special compared to a few other Myu songs that certainly outshine it in the "battle songs" category. La Moon, anyone?

Miri's review of Unmei was Utsukushiku

Tone/Mood: The opening of this song is gorgeous beyond belief. The moment I hear it, I can picture rain falling from the sky on a dreary day into a flowing river, which means it perfectly expresses the water element that Neptune represents. The general overall feeling of the song reminds me of some older 70's era Japanese/Chinese pop songs. Very mellow and sorrowful, but still very gorgeous... almost feels like it could be used in a ballroom dance, actually.

Placement: As Iron Mouse said, why isn't this in an episode?! It was nicely placed on a CD dedicated solely to Uranus/Neptune/Chibimoon, but other than that, it didn't really appear anywhere else, did it?! Not even a spot on the Memorial Song Box or any other compilation CD, for that matter. A true pity, since you can't really find this CD for sale anywhere anymore.

Memorable: As one of only two Michiru/Neptune image songs, you can bet it's memorable! As I said before, it's one of the more mellow BSSM songs, and perfectly describes Neptune. It's so different from the usual lyrical and sweet or epic and it's-battle-time songs that plague BSSM, and that difference is what makes it easily identifiable and easily loved.

Lyrics:

What kind of sadness could hold me still
So that I can never again turn around
If you're here with me

So beautiful. So VERY beautiful. The first time I heard this song I was nearly moved to tears, seriously. The combination of the beautiful instrumental, the gorgeous singing, and the lyrics totally won me over.

Overall rating:

5 hearts, no less. I'd give it more if the rating system allowed for more than 5!

Miri's review of Sakura Fubuki

Tone/Mood: Let's just say I have a bit of a soft spot for Spanish-sounding songs, and the first time I heard the beginning of this song I was totally convinced I would be in for an amazing, spicy Latin theme complete with guitar rifts and trills. Well, I was disappointed, to say the least. Don't get me wrong - I loved the intro, but once the singing started my mind tuned out. Rei is very talented, and her voice sounds great, but the melody of the song itself is rather... boring.

Placement: I've only seen this song in the live performance, since I stopped following PGSM after Act 15 or so due to lack of interest. As others have said, I think it was totally underhyped and could have deserved much better treatment. It's placement on Mars's character single was a nice touch, though. Did I also mention I had a soft spot for character singles? Well, now you know.

Memorable: not really. The last time I listened to this song was yesterday, and as I sit here right now writing this article, I can't even recall much of the song itself past the catchy intro.

Lyrics:

I didn't like them, plain and simple. From the title of the song and the intro music I was expecting something daring, teasing, but still strong and powerful. What I ended up getting was something about wanting to stay a child and memories of the past and hopes for the future. Boring cliche fluff, in my opinion. It would do nicely to have the lyrics match the music next go around, and to have the song itself match the intro and title. Thanks for misleading me, PGSM producers..

Overall Rating:

Sorry guys. I'm usually really attached to most SM songs I listen to but Sakura Fubuki just didn't do it for me. Two hearts for the amazing intro. This isn't a bad song at all, but it's just plain -boring- and not memorable at all.
