ARCHIVED HTML - Be Your Girl

Be Your Girl

Recently, I found out that "Be Your Girl" was first released by Kawabe Chieko as the ending theme for the anime "Elfin Lied" (which by the way, is a VERY violent anime with some disgustingly cute looking characters). The song was produced by the infamous Saisuke Kato (ex-Lucifer , a.k.a. Atsuro). "Be Your Girl" is Kawabe Chieko's first ever release, and it wasn't even intended to be a j-pop hit. Go figure xD

Dark Sailor Mercury - Ilse

Tone/Mood

It's slow and fast. I like the beat. It's relaxed. Typical Jpop. Kawabe sings fantastically. In the song "Shining" she even reaches the very high notes. Kawabe is getting more popular. Also for me. I like Be your girl very much. It's one of the first songs. But I think Hoshi ni negai wo, has a little more. Be your girl has a nice melody (I always asked myself, why have the Japanese girls all nice melodies? The pop in our country stinks).

Placement

Not in series, but on the single "Be your girl" and on "Brilliance."

Memorable

Yes, It's very memorable to me. It's Kawabe's first song, and after a while, I knew that I was a Kawabe Chieco fan. I have most of her songs. Be your girl is one of her first songs. Kawabe has very different styles. But I think it's so great that her music seems to have that little bit more than what the pgsm actors have.

Lyrics:

Again and again I thought I was okay with that
I'm sharing you with somebody else, but
Again and again I cry knowing I don't want that, "(I wanna) be your girl..."
Even if it's a lie, even if it's just for my peace of mind, tell me I'm the only one

It has some parts that makes me think of "Change of Pace." The lyrics also go about attracting boyfriends and say that you have say that there is only one etc. But there is different, whew. For me, it doesn't matter that much. I can't read Japanese, and I only can understand some words, so for me it's just nice.

Overall rating:

5 hearts. Because Kawabe Chieco ROCKS! And I like the melody, beat, and the lyrics? Whatever, the lyrics don't matter that much. It's melody what says that I have to give 5 hearts.

Sailor Mercury - Topaz

Tone/Mood

Be your girl is a girlie song. Now what do I mean by this. It is very upbeat and sound like a Hillary song. Chieco voice is very pleasing and works with the sound of this song.

Memorable

Not really. It sound just like most songs I have heard. Nothing really stands out. Its nice to listen to but i would not want to just press replay on this

Lyrics

This song speaks of a love for a boy. But this boy has to girls her and another. Chieco wants him to be hers and hers alone.

"I'm sharing you with somebody else, but"

She thought that she could share him if it meant she still have part of him. But she ends just crying every night

"I won't run away from the world waiting ahead on this path
I want to see for myself where it leads
Even if I get hurt even more than I have already, "I'm gonna be your girl!"
There's no way you can stop me, because this is the way I feel "

But she decides that he will be mine and no matter how things end if I don't try than I did this for nothing. Better to have love and lost then not at all.

Overall Rating

I give this song a 2. Just a plain song to me.

Princess Sailor Moon - Kaitlin

Tone/Mood

Ahhh this song I remember. It's got a bit of a rock edge to it. It has a very funky beat in the background too. Cheiko sounds great here too. You forget that it's her actually. The way the lines in the chorus run together sounds awesome. This song definately leaves me feeling uplifted. I just know I'll be humming this the rest of the day.

Placement

Again, only on the Cheiko (or is it actually Chieco?) CD.

Memorable

Only if you're a fan of her ^^

Lyrics

The lyrics are actually a bit mature, which surprised me. It's all about dating a guy that you really love, but he's seeing other people too. And all she wants is to "be (his) girl". The chorus says this the most clearly.

"Again and again I thought I was okay with that
I'm sharing you with somebody else, but
Again and again I cry knowing I don't want that, "(I wanna) be your girl..."
Even if it's a lie, even if it's just for my peace of mind, tell me I'm the only one "

I think anyone who has dated someone who doesn't love them the way they do can sympathize with this. The line that really sticks with me is:

"Telling myself it would be cowardly to cry here
I'm gritting my teeth and holding myself back"

There's something about those lines that really makes my heart hurt. The song makes me happy and sad all at the same time.

Overall Rating

4 - Again, a really good song. But I have other favorites.

Princess Serenity - Elly

Tone/Mood

I'm waiting for Hillary Duff or some other Disney brat to come flying out of my Winamp player when I load this song. This is your typical Disney pop, complete with an annoying, repetitive background, and a simple lyrics collection. Ugh. You can FEEL the song writer crying when you load this song. Poor man, whoever you are. I hope you at least make a lot of money doing this.

Placement

This was the second track to the Be Your Girl single from Chieko. No placement in PGSM, and thank God. I think this song is cute and everything, but I honestly don't see how it could have been incorporated. Maybe it could have been a replacement for "Yakusoku" from Act 41. Bleh, whatever.

Memorable

If you're a Chieko fan, of course. Outside of that, I don't see why'd you remember this song. It's very, very average sounding.

Lyrics

Again and again I thought I was okay with that
I'm sharing you with somebody else, but
Again and again I cry knowing I don't want that, "(I wanna) be your girl..."
Even if it's a lie, even if it's just for my peace of mind, tell me I'm the only one

Vomit bag, anyone? I am sick of the stereotype that girls need guys, and that Kawabe Chieko is just going to go shrivel up and DIE if this guy isn't interested in her. Seriously Kawabe, kick him where it hurts and ignore him if he's a cheater, or player, or whatever. People shouldn't continue this stereotype, I don't care how "traditional" they think it is.

Overall Rating

The song is mediocre, to say the least. While I like Kawabe Chieko, I can't say I like any of the aspects of the song. It's a decent tune to listen to as filler, but other than that it has no real purpose other than to continue a stereotype that just infuriates me.

Sailor Neptune - Ruth

Tone/Mood

Popish! Upbeat and it sounds like a 'happy go lucky' type of song. Some have claimed that this song style is similar to Natalie Imbruglia's songs. But I think differently. Chieko has her own style and I'll stick to that. I remember I first downloaded this song via BT and I instantly fell in love with Chieko! Her voice is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo pretty! I'm so happy I bought her singles as it's really worth having your own copy. LOL! Though I must say this song isn't my favorite, it's still good to listen to.

Placement

-----

Memorable

Popish style fans will love this song. Totally upbeat and one of those songs you can play over and over and not get sick over it. I believe all Chieko fans will love all of her works so I think this will stay in people's minds for a long while.

Lyrics

"Again and again I thought I was okay with that
I'm sharing you with somebody else, but
Again and again I cry knowing I don't want that, "(I wanna) be your girl..."
Even if it's a lie, even if it's just for my peace of mind, tell me I'm the
only one

It hurts when the anesthesia of your kiss wears off
Are you leaving already? "

Oooooooooo she's sharing her lover! *gasp* Dude if he's playing you like that, leave! Ok I know these are just lyrics but that is how I feel. Now after rereading that it makes me believe that she is in the shadows and wishes he was with her and pretends that he's kissing her instead of the other chick. Confusing! Nevertheless the lyrics are great as always. Very memorable and catchy and upbeat. What more could you ask for?!

Overall Rating

4 Hearts. Another song I didn't give 5 hearts to. It's ok for what it is but after hearing her other works, this song just doesn't do it for me as it should. But because this is a Chieko song, it's worth downloading/buying!

Sailor V - Jessica

Tone/Mood

The beat is pretty decent and the speed doesn't seem rushed; though the pace may seem slow, it is not out of place. The tone makes it seem as if the lyrics being sung are simply statements that there aren't particularly strong feelings about, as if the situation has already been given up on.

Placement

None

Memorable

Okay I'll admit it, I was humming this, despite trying not to. I don't find it very memorable, but do for the typical beat of the song.

Lyrics

Telling myself it would be cowardly to cry here
I'm gritting my teeth and holding myself back

These lyrics I like, if only for the emotion flowing through them.

Again and again I thought I was okay with that
I'm sharing you with somebody else, but
Again and again I cry knowing I don't want that, "(I wanna) be your girl..."
Even if it's a lie, even if it's just for my peace of mind, tell me I'm the only one

And these just kill the whole song for me. I hate songs that make out women are utterly dependant on the feelings that men have toward them, as if we can't cope without the support of a man. I'll stop there otherwise there will be a long rant on the subject.

Overall Rating

2/5 - I may not like the lyrics a whole lot, but the beat was too catchy

Sailorasteroid - Sailor Pluto

Mood:

OK, I'll come out and say it: the first part of the verse is a clone of Hillary Duff's "So Yesterday" (minus the "if you wanna" echo) and the end of the chorus is a doppelgänger of Avril Lavigne's "Complicated." Of course, there is the minor difference that if you had a balance scale of coolness and on the left plate you put Avril and Hillary and on the right plate you put a single carbon atom from one of Chieco's toenails, such a scale would be leaning entirely to the right. But mostly, what it feels like is a song by Milkcan, the fictional band from the Um Jammer Lammy game. It's bouncy, with a very simple beat for the swaying of hips. It helps if you're two-dimensional.

Placement:

Be Your Girl was the lead track on the eponymous single, which featured the awesome "Venetian blinds" cover. The pinching of the blinds provides a nice similarity to Chieco's hair. (Hey, what do you want in this section? It's not in the show and I hate writing it off with a "N/A.")

Memorable:

Only because of the aforementioned musical references. If those other songs didn't exist, I'd say this was nothing special, which is how I feel about those songs.

Lyrics:

It actually sounds like she's singing, "Maybe I want to be your girl." Which seems to reflect the lyrics of the song, wherein we find that the apostrophic young man whose girl she wishes to be in fact has another sweetheart. But she seems a tad obsessed.

Overall:

It's Chieco, and that's enough for me. If you've come for brilliant lyrics and experimental music, Hamasaki Ayumi is right down the hall. This is bubblegum pop and a great set of pipes. Three.

Sailor Uranus - Nickole

Tone/Mood

This song has a very fascinating beat to it, actually. I liked the popish sound it had to it, as well as the guitar! It makes me wish that our pop music over here in America were as great sounding as theres in Japan!

Placement

I think it's on one of Kawabes CD's.

Memorable

It's definatly a memorable song, because of how great it sounds, and as I LOVE Kawabe Chieco songs! I can never get enoupgh of her songs! ;)

Lyrics

Again and again I thought I was okay with that
I'm sharing you with somebody else, but
Again and again I cry knowing I don't want that, "(I wanna) be your girl...
Even if it's a lie, even if it's just for my peace of mind, tell me I'm the only one

I like these lyrics in this song, becasue they have a sad and loving nature at the sametime when she sings them.

Overall Rating

A 5, because of I personally think its one of Kawabe Cheico's best songs!

Tuxedo Mask - Kero-chan

Tone/Mood:

This song is an upbeat and cheerful melody, with a lot of rhythm. This song somehow reminds me "Complicated" from Avril Lavigne XD. Very different form "Hoshi ni Negai wo", both make a perfect addition to Chieco's non-anime music debut.

Placement:

It's her first song in her first single; excellent beginning for Chieco.

Memorable:

You have to! As a Chieco fan or not, this song has something that makes you love it, even if it's the first time you hear it. Her voice has magic and it will enchant you the very first moment you hear it.

Lyrics:

Again, excellent lyrics! It's good how the lyrics are for Chieco, considering her age. Sometimes, singers perform songs with childish lyrics, or way too mature subjects, Chieco's songs are really cool, and they are common teenage girl's subjects. I was going to put the chorus as my favorite part of the song, but this definitely has to by the best one:

I won't run away from the world waiting ahead on this path
I want to see for myself where it leads
Even if I get hurt even more than I have already, "I'm gonna be your girl!"
There's no way you can stop me, because this is the way I feel

If you consider the order of the songs in the single, you could say that they are telling us a story where, "Be your girl" is where Chieco wants the boy, and "Hoshi ni Negai wo" is where they have been dating and they have a problem. XD Well that's my opinion, XD maybe I'm crazy. ^^;

Overall Rating:

Another excellent melody, everything is good, from the upbeat melody and the well written lyrics. 5 stars to Chieco! YAY!

Sailor Mars - Akarui

Tone/Mood

Hmm. A bit faster than "Hoshi ni Negai wo" (in my mind anyway) , and, of course, at first I thought it was one of those "Weeeeeee I love youuuuuuuu you love meeeeeeee I only need youuuuuuuuuuu" songs. Ahem. Next time, remind me to actually read the lyrics before I review :D

Placement

Damnit! This would have been PERFECT for Usagi to sing for Mamoru! Ahem. Sorry about that. There weren't enough PGSM songs as far as I think :P

Memorable

Oooooooh yes, this one will be stuck in my mind for quite some time. First cause it's the first Chieco song I heard (which is actually quite logical, but still). Second cause I think I saw the video not long afterwards, and it was all weird, you know, like when you like an actor on a show, get used to this person and then see him/her in another show :P . Third cause I liked that voice at once. *huggles Chieco again*

Lyrics

Well, well, another fine example of my "naiveté" :P . I listen to a song, la-di- da-di-da, sing along (of course, gee, who wouldn't want to :P ) , and realize that it's a sad song. Aha ^^;; .

Come on, please
You're the only one inside me
Tell me I'm the only one you love
There's just one thing I want, I simply want all of you

Like, this part seems desperate, in a way. A cry for help: I do love you within every inch of my body and I want to hear you telling me the same thing...

I won't run away from the world waiting ahead on this path
I want to see for myself where it leads
Even if I get hurt even more than I have already, "I'm gonna be your girl!"
There's no way you can stop me, because this is the way I feel

This one makes me think she's getting on the battlefied. "What? You're not saying it ? Right, I won't keep my lazy ass here and wait! You're going to be MINE. Muahahahahaha." (I'm close, right ? RIGHT ? :P )

But of course, the chorus is ever so right for many women in the world...

Again and again I thought I was okay with that
I'm sharing you with somebody else, but
Again and again I cry knowing I don't want that, "(I wanna) be your girl..."
Even if it's a lie, even if it's just for my peace of mind, tell me I'm the only one

I'm so thinking of women dating married men. Don't know why it jumped on me. Doesn't it make you think this too ^^;; ?

Overall Rating

Hmm, I would give it a 5. Lyrics, music, mood, memorable, plus the fact that it's her first solo single (I wouldn't count her 156P no Blues as solo :P ) . *huggles Chieco*

Sailor Luna - Emo-chan

Tone/Mood

This song sounds like its from the mid-90s. It has that funky feel to it, and sounds like a song I wouldve heard as a young teen. I like the way you can hear her voice nicely in it.

Placement

N/A

Memorable

When I hear of Chieco, I will think of this song. I really like this song from her, because its catchy and cute.

Lyrics

I found the words to be kinda confusing, like what was she really talking about? Again and again I thought I was okay with that I'm sharing you with somebody else, but Again and again I cry knowing I don't want that, "(I wanna) be your girl..." Even if it's a lie, even if it's just for my peace of mind, tell me I'm the only one It hurts when the anesthesia of your kiss wears off Are you leaving already?

In on part she sings about not being able to date a boy, and then she talks about how much she wants him to love her. I didnt get a clear message from the words.

Overall Rating

A 4. I love this song and I think it's a cute song for Chieco

Nephrite - Frosted_Rain

Tone/Mood

WOW, so inspiring!!!! So lively... this is what I call a love song! The electric guitar intro is also great for an opening. Too pop... very pop (like britney but not worse). The song could be compared to other JPOP hits from Udata Hikaru, Boa, Do As Infinity, etc. This is a good song dedicated to girls out there desperate for their boy crushed (oh... love... how sad).

Placement

It has a music video. Good video. Chieco is changing clothes, hanging out on the laundry taking pictures, dressing up... nice video. Still, the music is on her album.

Memorable

The song was stuck on my mind long time ago. It's like the songs of Komatsu Ayaka stuck on my head, humming while walking. Definitely for Chieko fans out there!

Lyrics

Ne onegai
Atashi no naka wa anata dake
Ai shite iru no wa atashi dake tte itte
Hoshii mono wa hitotsu dake tada anata no zenbu ga hoshii na

The words that I alwasys say to my girlfriend... probably the same words my girlfriend tells me... (what can I say, THAT'S LOVE!!).

Overall Rating

4 hearts out of five. Too pop here. The lyrics, sounds, meaning is great. Not the pop-piness of it. I suggest Moeco's "A Place in the Sun" as an alternative for this song.

Kuroki Mio - Kara

TONE/MOOD:

This song is like a kid going through puberty. It starts out fairly weak and wispy, and then (with the help of some nice electric guitar) it grows into something with some weight and sincerity to it. It reminds me a bit of Avril in one of her calmer moods.

PLACEMENT:

From Kawabe Cheiko's 'Be Your Girl' single

MEMORABLE:

It falls into Chieko's normal style, for the most part, but something about the orchestration makes it stick out in my mind. So, yes, slightly.

LYRICS:

Well ... this could sort of be my image song. When I was reading the translation, I was actually rather shocked. I rate the lyrics high for personal reasons, but it's one of those typical J-pop songs that makes you feel like you're walking in on the middle of a conversation. I wish I knew more about the story.

OVERALL RATING:

3 out of 5 ... original and good, but still an average Chieko song.

Sailor Jupiter - Joy Azama

Tone/Mood

I first heard this song after I downloaded it through this website, and playing it in my laptop while I write a song review. My first impression is that its mood is a cross between Hilary Duff and Avril Lavigne. It is fit to be in a teeny bopper movie like 'A Cinderella Story', 'Sleepover,' etc. This song is okay for me, not much reaction because I'm not really that much of a fan of these kinds of songs. However, since this song is performed by a Seramyu Sailor Mercury, I can't help but be excited to hear her voice. My mood for this song is okay, pretty normal, and I think it is worth listening. Nice tune, great beating, good for those days that you just want to sit down and relax.

Placement

Not placed in the PGSM series, only on CD.

Memorable

Although it is performed beautifully and without flaws, it is not really memorable for me, perhaps to Kawabe fans, it is.

Lyrics

Again and again I thought I was okay with that
I'm sharing you with somebody else, but
Again and again I cry knowing I don't want that, "(I wanna) be your girl..."
Even if it's a lie, even if it's just for my peace of mind

Come on, please
You're the only one inside me
Tell me I'm the only one you love
There's just one thing I want, I simply want all of you

Basically this song is about a girl who is in love with a boy, but feelings were not that mutual. The girl is in love with the boy much more than he loves her. Considering Kawabe's age, I think this song will fit her. There is even a possibility that this song accounts the real life of Kawabe. Now that I have the translated lyrics, I think Kawabe delivered this song with great depth and with feelings to support the meaning of the lyrics. Good job! ^_^

Overall Rating

3 out of 5 hearts! Great singing, great lyrics, and great beat! Definitely sung by an expert, but the song is just too plain for me. It does not interest me one bit, and it does not evoke inspiration on my part. But Kawabe is Kawabe, great singer!

Prince Endymion - Alex

Tone/Mood:

If it wasn't Ballad and Bows, I wouldn't have heard "Be Your Girl" which would have been a BIG mistake! "Be Your Girl" is a GREAT song. I cannot explain how much I love it! It has jazzy sound and nice dance melody, but that isn't everything! When you start listening to this WONDERFUL peace, you will understand me!

Placement:

I love Sailor Mercury/Chisaki but I have to admit that Naru's songs are much greater than hers! I do NOT understand why PGSM directors didn't put "Be Your Girl" in the series!

Memorable:

This peace is VERY memorable! I think that Naru's music is great! She sings with her heart!

Lyrics:

Like "Hoshi Ni Negai Wo"'s lyrics, "Be Your Girl"'s ones are very dreamy and romantic!

"Baby, I wanna be your girl
Baby, all I need is you"

Overall rating:

Excellent song! This review was very small because there isn't anything I can say about "Be Your Girl". I rate Naru's songs with 5 hearts!

Kunzite - Loreal

Tone/Mood:

Is it me or does this song sound familiar. I can't help but think I have heard something similar to this. Never the less, it has a good beat and its fun to sing along with.

Placement:

Nowhere in the series.

Memorable:

Nothing strikes me as memorable. It sounds like another run of the mill J-Pop song.

Lyrics:

Again and again I thought I was okay with that I'm sharing you with somebody else, but Again and again I cry knowing I don't want that, "(I wanna) be your girl..." Even if it's a lie, even if it's just for my peace of mind, tell me I'm the only one

Ok, if he is with other girls, she needs to find another guy. He isn't worth it.

Overall rating:

This song gets a 3. It is a good song but the lyrics bug me a little.

Sailor Pluto - Ciao

Tone/Mood

I like this song - it's a bit 'teenybopper' in style, reminiscent of Hilary Duff, but it is still a good song, for all that. It's positive sounding, and upbeat, and very dance-y. If I wasn't doing this review, and my hubby sitting here watching a movie, I'd be bopping around to this song. :)

Placement

Not in the the series.

Memorable

This is the first time I've heard the song, so I can't really say if it's memorable, but as it's not set on replay, I can still sort of hear bits of it, so I can tell this is gonna stick with me for a while. I can easily see it becoming Kawabe-san's signature song, if she doesn't already have one.

Lyrics

I think the lyrics really do fit the music, they're not overdone, or even underdone. The singing is quality (as it should be, since she was in the Sera Myu) and the lyrics are representative of what someone would be feeling in a situation like I can see in my mind when listening to the song.

Overall Rating

I really like this song and will give it 4/5 hearts. The song is poppy without being overdone. The whole package just works.
