Mermaid

Kuroki Mio - Kara

TONE/MOOD:

This is much more what I'm used to hearing from Chieko. It's definitely in the mode of American pop at the moment, which I'm normally not a big fan of (mainly because it all sounds alike). But the orchestration and Chieko's incredible vocals keep it from being too mainstream.

MEMBORABLE:

Yes - for me, anyway. It does sound a bit like our current mainstream, but it stands out a bit.

LYRICS:

Everyone else is gonna be talking about all the English lyrics in this, so I'll let that lie and let everyone else talk about it.

Right now I'm just trying to find where in the world I fit in
Is there someone listening to this song who knows what it's like to be alone

There's a trend in Chieko's lyrics, to the point that I wonder how much of her work is really very personal. But I like that. There's a connection there that not all singers accomplish.

OVERALL:

4 out of 5. Nearly perfect, but not as standout as, say, 'Candy Baby' this month.

Sailor Uranus - G.E. Artemis

TONE/MOOD:

Phew, a calmer song. I think that a song like this is needed to balance out Candy Baby. XD This is one of those songs that you can listen to and totally relax, like if you’ve had a bad day or something. I also love that it’s (almost) all in English. It’s an opportunity for Chieko to practice her mad English skillz. She’s doing very well.

PLACEMENT:

N/A

MEMBORABLE:

It’s memorable because it’s all in English, for one. It’s also memorable just because it is. This is definitely one of Chieko’s better songs, to me anyway.

LYRICS:

Chieko should write her own lyrics more often.

Is there someone listening to this song who knows what it's like to be alone

This is my favorite line in the whole song. I don’t know why exactly, I just love it.

OVERALL:

The only question I have is "Why in the world is it called ‘Mermaid’?"

Sailor Saturn - Miri-chan

Tone/Mood

Oh my... I hear the slight country taste coming back. Well, it is very slow, and has that strange "marine" beat. Hard to describe it. I think it would have been better if the beats in the background weren't so strong, to give it a smoother flow.

Memorable

Not very. It didn't stay in my mind very long.

Lyrics

Nothing special here that stood out. I'm not sure how the title of the song ties up with the lyrics, which makes it a bit worse. Well, part of it was English, but that wasn't very special, either.

3 out of 5. The beats bothered me, and it was just too plain.

Sailor Neptune - Ruth

Tone/Mood

A love ballad so the mood/tone is slow. I love how she's singing more then half of the song in English. Shows you how much she's trying to cross over to other nationalities. *admires* Anyway, 'Mermaid' is the exact oppisite of 'Candy Baby' by a whole 360 degrees. You can tell (without the lyrics) that this has a bit of sadness to it. Nothing to make you cry but to think about what she's truely saying- if that makes any sense. I'm not sure if that does but I know what I mean. @_@

Tough one to say. It really depends if you enjoy this song. Seeing how it's not my favorite, I will be saying no. I just can't sit there and listen to it over and over again.

Lyrics

"You've hurt me, alright?
I'm understanding your point of view more and more
How can I let you know I'm hurting
Right now I'm just trying to find my point in this world
You made me what I am
You made me
You've done it all for me"

Again, more then half of the lyrics are in English so everyone reading knows the gist of the song. She's hurting. She hurts because of something he did but she can't get angry with him. Why? Well according to her, he made her the way she is. She's thankful for that in some way but she ends up getting hurt. Now if I got the wrong impression, sorry. ^^;

3 out of 5 Not my favorite Chieco song. I really love her Pop songs more.

Sailor Luna - Emo-chan

Tone/Mood

This is a much slower song. I like the beginning of it. It made me think of Mandy Moore for some reason, but it’s very pretty.

I think Cheico’s voice sticks out a bit better in this piece, and I think I’ll be able to remember this song more than, for example, Candy Baby. She sounds mature in this song, and I like that.

Lyrics

Aww depressing words in this song. You can tell in it that she sounds upset, and being one who doesn’t know much Japanese, that’s important. The lyrics are also really good.

"And there's a side of me that no one sees
I hide my tears. You know my fears. Your smile is all I need"

I could relate to that part of the song. I love songs that I can relate to.

Hmm... I’ll give it a 4. I like this song and it sounds really soothing, even though it’s a sad song. But it’s still really good!

Nephrite - Frosted_Rain

Tone/Mood

At last, something opposite from Candy Baby, deep and emotional. A good combination of English and Japanese in this song (though Chieko’s English kinda strangely pronounced).

Kizuna Iro by Chieko. Lots of deep meanings and full of emotion. This is the type of song I like to hear from her beyond all those pop-ish melodies.

Lyrics

You've hurt me, alright?
I'm understanding your point of view more and more
How can I let you know I'm hurting
Right now I'm just trying to find where in the world I fit in
Is there someone listening to this song who knows what it's like to be alone.

Lots of pain here mentioned. Loneliness is one good factor after being hurt by someone close to you. The search for someone who can understand you of all the pain that’s in you now.

A strange song title with a very good tone, lyrics, message and music. 5 hearts for a wonderful song. Probably one of the best songs I’ve heard from Chieko since Be Your Girl and Kizuna Iro.

Sailor V - Jessica

Tone/Mood

The song starts on a gentle, positive note, and progresses to what could be angst during the chorus. The lyrics seem to point in that direction, but the tone used sounds as if she’s explaining and stating, not worrying and accusing.

Placement

None in PGSM

Memorable

I think I find it more memorable because it fits a fandom couple I’m writing a lot of fic for at the moment. I generally find it memorable because I wasn’t expecting Kawabe to sing most of the song in English and I was really impressed with how she handled the song.

Lyrics

You've hurt me, alright?
I'm understanding your point of view more and more.
How can I let you know I'm hurting?
Right now I'm just trying to find where in the world I fit in.

I really like all the lyrics to this track, but these stand out because they could be used to describe all sorts of relationships, romantic or otherwise, and I’m sure most people have felt like this at some point in their lives.

Sailor Pluto - Sailorasteroid

Mood:

Straight pop, made interesting with liberal use of English.

Placement:

none

Memorable:

OK, OK, Chieco's getting better at English. Slowly. Give her credit for tackling such a lot of it. OTOH, where's the mermaid? I want to hear about life under the sea.

Lyrics:

Quoth Dana Carvey: ". . . these incredibly trite lyrics. . . it's like they're making them up as they go along. . . 'There's a lady I know/If I didn't know her/She'd be the lady/I didn't know'." That's like the lyrics for Mermaid.

Overall:

Keep going, spend a year in Hawaii or somethihg, you'll work off that accent. Three.
