Iron Mouse reviews I Miss You
tone/mood This is a sweet ballad that has both Usagi and Seiya pouring their hearts out. Even if you can't understand Japanese you can tell that each character is in pain and is singing about that pain in private. I honestly never Seiya's true feelings towards Usagi until this song was created. You can tell she is singing on a level much deeper than physical love.
placement I Miss You occurs when Usagi is at her wit's end because her true love, Mamoru, still hasn't written her. She is torn up about it and cannot understand why the man she is destined to be with for all eternity cannot bother to write. She does not know the true reason. She goes onto a rooftop to think about him and how much she loves him. The result is a tearful message to the sky that she hopes will reach him. "Elsewhere" is Seiya. She is realizing that she has several mixed up feelings towards Usagi. Is she in love? Usagi reminds Seiya of Kakyuu-hime but the reason is unclear. Seiya also wants to protect the girl she finds naive and susceptible to harm. Her friends, Taiki and Yaten protest the friendship so Seiya goes off by herself to think. Her feelings come out in I Miss You.
memorable Katayama Sayuri's voice in this song is so beautiful you can't help but to listen. Combine that with ANZA's Usagi and you have musical genius. Their harmonies make you want to listen to this song over and over. I Miss You is the turning point in Eien Densentsu for Seiya and Usagi. Their subconscious and their hearts become closer and allow for SailorMoon to accept the Sailor Starlights more readily.
lyrics
"What is this deep inside my heart Only that "I Miss You"
Usagi is experiencing a broken heart for the first time. She knows deep down that she will always be with Mamoru but she cannot handle being so far away from him and not being able to speak to him, to see him, to hold him.
"Inside my heart I only wish to let you know how I feel" "I cannot replace The man you love I will always stay by your side I want to protect you"
Seiya feels extremely close to Usagi and shares her pain of not being close to the one you love. She is not trying to take Mamoru's place but is offering friendship, closeness, protection from the hurt she feels inside.

Jezebel's review of I Miss You
Tone/Mood: "I Miss You" is a gentle, melancholic ballad, and if the lovely little guitar melody at the beginning wasn't enough to point to this, then the relaxed tempo, background strings, and both Anza and Sayuri's vocals portray the Usagi/Seiya relationship (in my opinion) better than the "kiss" in the anime. Anza and Sayuri harmonize so well, and their voices carry the weight of each character's emotional situation: Usagi is feeling lonely while Mamoru doesn't answer her letters, and Seiya harbors a strong but unrequited love for Usagi.
Placement: "I Miss You" occurs not too early on in the Eien Densetsu musical, but it is at a point where Usagi is alone, heartbroken over her situation with Mamoru. Seiya, too, is alone, after Taiki and Yaten protest her attempts at friendship with Usagi. Both have a great deal of emotional weight on their characters, and it is exposed here during the song. As far as the actual plot goes, this (arguably) doesn't seem to further it, but is a welcome look at Usagi and Seiya's characters with depth.
Memorable: This song is extremely memorable. Anza and Sayuri's harmonies are wonderful, and they just pull you right into the song. It is almost a haunting sort of memorability, and its gentle, mellowed melodies .
Lyrics: The lyrics express Seiya's hidden longing for Usagi (who, to her, is reminiscent of Princess Kakyuu), which really seem to remain hidden as Usagi pines for Mamoru, who is supposed to be an ocean and a continent away. Usagi's feeling of heartbreak isn't helped by her feeling of loneliness.

"It's a fact that love creates loneliness
You know I can't become an adult
Don't leave me alone anymore"
You know I can't become an adult
Don't leave me alone anymore"
Usagi acknowledges that in knowing that Mamoru was going to leave, she would feel alone, but because of her personality, she simply can't help but feel lonely. The lyrics address that while a more matured person would perhaps be able to handle the situation, Usagi simply doesn't feel that she can.
"I cannot replace
The man you love
I will always stay by your side
I want to protect you"
The man you love
I will always stay by your side
I want to protect you"
This verse is a little more candid in Seiya's expressing her want to stand by Usagi, even though she knows full well that she cannot replace Mamoru in her heart. It is the inner emotional conflicts within Usagi and Seiya that are brought out during "I Miss You", and the lyrics provide an excellent look at them.

Overall Rating:
Very few Sera Myu songs come close to the amount of depth that "I Miss You" brings to the table in Eien Densetsu, and the song itself is presented beautifully with a melodic, flowing nature to it, particularly in Anza and Sayuri's vocals, and is quite near unforgettable without being an overly upbeat battle song a la "La Soldier" or "LINK".
