amakuchi (甘口) - a very light and sweet variety of the Japanese alcoholic beverage, sake. It is typically only brewed in winter. Amami - an island near Okinawa. Sayuri goes there for a party for Iwamura Electric.

Arashino - a kimono maker who makes kimono in the Yuzen style. He is friends with Nobu. The Baron Matsunaga throws a party for him after he buys a kimono from him. He also gives Sayuri a job during World War II outside of Gion when it closes down. He has a wife and a son named Juntaro.

Arashino, Juntaro - Arashino the kimono maker's son. He is very young during World War II. Sayuri plays with him. He often cries from hunger.

Arata, Gonroku - an Edo period artist. The Chairman gives a lacquered box made by this artist to the Baron at his party in Hakone.

Asami - the name of one of Mameha's maids. She is the one responsible for Hatsumomo and Korin obtaining one of Mameha's kimono and ruining it. She had an affair with one of the dressers at the theatre, which is how Hatsumomo bribes her for the kimono.

Auntie - a failed geisha who works as a maid of sorts in the Nitta okiya. "Mother," Nitta Kayoko, broke her hip and ended her apprenticeship for something she did years ago, ending any chance Auntie ever had at being a geisha. Nitta Kayoko is actually her younger sister, since they had both been adopted by Granny.

Awajiumi - a retired sumo wrestler who runs the Gion Registry Office. His nickname is "Awaji." Many geisha try to keep him happy because of his status in Gion.
