Geisha Costuming: The "Memoirs" Movie vs. Modern Geisha in Gion As you might imagine, the differences between the way a modern geisha living in Kyoto's Gion district and the how an on-screen geisha look are vast. I am no authority on the subject; luckily, Naomi Graham-Diaz of Immortal Geisha has written several helpful articles explaining the way geisha and maiko apply makeup and also their elaborate hair-styles. Specifically, I would like to direct you to this article by Graham-Diaz on the history of maiko and geisha make-up, and also this article on maiko hairstyles. If you are interested in learning more about modern geisha makeup and clothing, I encourage you to read both Kimono: Fashioning Culture and Geisha by Liza Dalby, who is reknowned for being the "only American woman to become a geisha". In reality, Liza Dalby stinted as a geisha in the Pontocho district of Kyoto for about a year, and never went through much of the rigorous training a regular geisha would undergo. This does not necessarily diminish her knowledge on the subject, on which she wrote her PhD dissertation.
