Memoirs of a Geisha Online Encyclopaedia

Please note that the names listed in this dictionary are organized by last name first, first name last (ex: Golden, Arthur), except in cases where a pseudonym has been used (ex: Mr. Snowshowers) where things are organized by the first letter of the name after the title. (Mr. Showshowers -> S category). Japanese words are italiziced and lowercase, while Japanese names are capitalized like regular proper nouns. You'll also notice that there are no entries for the letters L, Q, V, and X. It is because these sounds do not exist in the Japanese language, and also because there are no characters or places mentioned in the book that begin with these letters as a result.

The entries in this database were all been written by me -- the information can also be found in the book Memoirs of a Geisha, but if you plan to use any of these entries for your website or any other use, please credit this website.

If you haven't already, you may want to set your browser to view pages with Unicode (UTF-8). Using Mozilla Firefox, you can do this by going to "View", "Chracter Encoding", and selecting "Unicode (UTF-8)". With Internet Explorer, go to "View", "Encoding", and then select "Unicode". This is important if you want to be able to view the Japanese characters that appear frequently within the encyclopedia.

If you find any errors in the encyclopedia, please feel free to e-mail me about it! You will be creditted for any corrections or additions that are made on your behalf.

A special thanks goes out to Brendan Hamill for his invaluable help in editing this encyclopedia. I couldn't have completed this project without you!

Without further adieu, please enjoy! Just click on a letter below to go to the beginning letter of the entry you need.
