Haarhuis, Jakob - The invented translator of Sayuri's recorded dialogues. He is a Dutch man who watches one of Sayuri's performances in Kyoto in 1936. He is introduced to Sayuri in 1985 by a mutual acquaintance. He and Arnold Rusoff, both Professors of Japanese History at New York University, help to write the "preface" of the book.

Hakone - the Baron's estate. It is about 100 kilometers north of Tokyo. It is now a national park in Japan.

hatakikomi (叩き込み) - a technique that sumo wrestlers use to throw a larger opponent off-balance so that it is easier to throw them out of the ring.

Hatsumomo - a beautiful rival geisha of Mameha's, who is very popular and beautiful. She lives in the Nitta okiya. She hates Chiyo/Sayuri and does many things to make her life miserable. She has a penchant for drinking. She once had a danna, but hasn't had one in a long time. She has a boyfriend named Koichi. She eventually becomes "older sister" to Pumpkin.

Hatsuoki - an apprentice geisha with the same older sister as Hatsumomo, Tomihatsu. Hatsumomo was jealous of her and started to spread rumors about her so that she would be unsuccessful in Gion. She was eventually driven out of Gion because of Hatsumomo's rumors.

Hemingway, Ernest - a famous American author who became an ex-patriate and spent most of his life in Cuba with other ex-patriot writers and artists (F. Scott Fitzgerald is an example). He also worked as a medical assistant in the Spanish Civil War during World War II. It should be noted that he was extremely chauvinist and had a strong dislike for women outside of the bedroom. He eventually committed suicide in his 60s. Famous works by Hemingway include In Our Time, A Farewell to Arms, For Whom the Bell Tolls, and The Old Man and the Sea. Higashi-Oji Avenue - an eastern street in Kyoto, that intersects with Shijo Avenue. Mameha lives on top of a pharmacy on this street after World War II.

Hiroshige - a woodblock maker who made pornographic prints.

hitoe (単衣) - unlined kimono. They are typically used in September.
