nagauta (長歌) - a style of Japanese traditional singing, which is usually accompanied by the playing of shamisen. It literally translates to "long song."

Nanzen-ji Temple - the temple that owns the inn that Sayuri and Dr. Crab stay at for Sayuri's mizuage.

Teacher Nezumi - a nickname for Teacher Mizumi that literally means "Teacher Mouse."

Nippon Telephone & Telegraph - a company that today still provides telephone services all over Japan. It is usually known as NTT. Sayuri and Mameha entertain the President of this company on a limousine tour of Kyoto.

Nishioka, Minoru - the name of the man who the Chairman wants one of his daughters to marry. He almost doesn't marry her because of a scandal involving the illegitimate son of a geisha and a business man in Tokyo. Nitta, Kayoko - also referred to as "Mother," she is the owner of the Nitta okiya. She is the woman who broke Auntie's hip as an apprentice and also handles all of the okiya's accounts. She is actually Auntie's younger sister by adoption from Granny. She is described physically repulsive in the book, and is known to smoke a lot of tobacco.

Nitta Okiya (新田おきや) - the name of the okiya where Sayuri, Hatsumomo, and Pumpkin live.

Nitta, Sayuri - Chiyo's name as a geisha. She receives this name after she is made a full geisha and is adopted as the daughter of the Nitta okiya, just after the sale of her mizuage. She is the main character in the movie and novel, and tells us the story of her life.
