obebe (おべべ) - Kyoto dialect for the word "kimono." (see kimono)

obi (帯) - it holds an entire kimono together and it usually made of heavy silk brocade. The length of the obi signifies whether or not a woman is a geisha or maiko in Gion. If the obi is very long, the woman wearing it is a maiko. Older women and geisha wear much shorter obi. obi are very complicated to tie, and a dresser's help is usually necessary to tie one properly.

obijime (帯締め) - the cord that holds an obi together.

obon (お盆) - An annual Buddhist event for commemorating one's ancestors. It is believed that each year during obon, the ancestors' spirits return to this world in order to visit their relatives. (taken from this page) Chiyo recalls attending an obon festival with her mother when she was just four years old.

ohana (お花) - literally means "flower" (honorific). Ohana is the rate that geisha charge for their entertainment to customers. It is based on the time that one ohana stick of incense takes to burn out. The cost of an ohana is typically decided by the Gion Registry Office (in the book, it is 3 Yen), but popular geisha typically charge more ohana than what is determined by the Registry Office. Mameha is noted as charging 36 Yen per ohana, and Hatsumomo as charging 12 Yen per ohana.

Mrs. Okada - Mameha's accountant and mistress of the okiya where Mameha used to live. She comes with Mameha to settle the outcome of Mameha and Mother's bet.

okawa (尾川) - a medium-sized drum that geisha often learn how to play.

okiya (おきや) - the estate where geisha and maiko reside while they work as geisha without a danna or other source of income outside of regular work. The okiya provides geisha with shelter, a collection of kimono, and covers their food, medical expenses, and training costs (typically). The earnings a geisha makes while living here all go to the okiya.

Okada house - a general store that sells dry goods in Yoroido where Chiyo travels to buy incense at her father's request.

okobo (おこぼ) - tall laquered thong sandals that apprentice geisha wear.

onna-gata (女方) - a male actor who plays women's roles. Bando Shojiro is an onna-gata.

Onoe Shikan - the code name that Koichi uses to contact Hatsumomo with through Yoko.
