P Pierpont, J - Born on 17th April, 1837, John Pierpont Morgan was the son of a financer. In 1877, Morgan became a partner in Drexel, Morgan and Company. This was reorganized as J. P. Morgan and Company in 1895, making it one of the most important banking houses in the world. By 1902 Morgan controlled over 5,000 miles (8,000 km) of American railroads. He is well-known for being one of the richest Americans in the period following the Civil War and before the First World War. Pontocho District - a district in Kyoto that is just a single long alleyway. It is called "eel's bed" because of its shape. Shojiro holds his party here. ponzu (ぽんず) - a sauce that you eat tai no usugiri with. It is made with lemon, vinegar, soy sauce, and bonito flakes. Pumpkin - another girl about Chiyo's age, she was also adopted into the Nitta okiya to become a geisha. She was born in Sapporo, where she lived with her uncle after her mother died when she was five and her father sent her away, but after her uncle's business failed she was sent to live in an okiya. She is apprentice and younger sister to Hatsumomo, and her official geisha name after she turns her collar (that is, becomes a full geisha) is "Hatsumiyo," after Hatsumomo. During the World War II she works in a lens factory in Osaka; after the war she is not invited back into the Nitta okiya, but instead takes up residence in an okiya next door to where the geisha Korin lived. Pumpkin eventually betrays Sayuri, jealous when she's not adopted as the daughter of the okiya. She is also very superstitious. return to the encyclopedia |
