S Saiho - a sumo wrestler who is Miyagiyama's opponent at the Kyoto University Exhibition Hall sumo match. Sakamoto, Chiyo - the name of Nitta Sayuri before she becomes an apprentice geisha at the age of 14. Sakamoto, Jinichiro - first son of Sakamoto Minoru and Sakamoto Natsu. Died at the age of 6 in the 19th year of Meiji. Sakamoto, Masao - youngest son of Sakamoto Minoru and Sakamoto Natsu. Died at the age of 3 in the 19th year of Meiji. Sakamoto, Minoru - father of Chiyo and Satsu Sakamoto, Natsu - first wife of Chiyo and Satsu's father, who died when she was 24 years old, in the 19th year of the Meiji period. Sakamoto, Satsu - eldest daughter of Sakamoto Minoru and his second wife. Older sister of Chiyo who eventually is sold to a brothel (see jorou-ya) called the Tatsuyo in the Miyagawa-cho district of Kyoto, south of Gion. She eventually runs away from the brothel, and stops by Yoroido to meet up with the son of Mr. Sugi and run away with him from there. She is also referred to as "Shizu" by Tanaka Ichiro when he gets her name wrong, just before he sells the girls to Mr. Bekku. Her name as a prostitute working at the Tatsuyo is "Yukiyo." Sakuhei, Yoshida - the great master of the setoguro style of ceramics who became very famous after World War II. sanbon-ashi (三本足) - a design that is painted on the back of geisha's necks. It is meant to have an erotic effect on men who see it. It literally translates to "three legs." Sapporo - Pumpkin's hometown. A large international city in Japan. sarashi (晒) - a way that a geisha can strike a drum. It is done by striking the drum with one hand while simultaneously lifting the other arm. Deputy Minister of Finance Sato Noritaka - the man responsible for determining whether or not Iwamura Electric is a zaibatsu after World War II. He is a drunkard and wants to become Sayuri's danna, much to Nobu's dismay. Satoka - another rival geisha to Hatsumomo and Korin. Sayuko - a name that one of Hatsumomo's customers confuses Sayuri's name for. Senzuru - the town in which Tanaka Ichiro and his family live. It is near Yoroido but apparently a little larger than it. It is reported to be a dirty fishing town in the book. There is also a small poem that is connected to Senzuru that Chiyo, Satsu, and Tanaka-san sing together:
setoguro (せとぐろ) - a style of ceramics produced primarily in the Momoyama period of Japanese history. Setoguro means "black seto." Setoguro are typically used during tea ceremony. shamisen (三味線) - a three stringed instrument that looks similar to a guitar. It is played by geisha and other performers in accompaniment with singing. geisha who were not talented at dance were often encouraged to specialize in shamisen. Shibaraku (暫く) - a famous Kabuki play that is performed in the Minamiza Theatre. It means "a little while." Shijo Avenue - the street where Chiyo goes to purchase crackers that Auntie is fond of. It means "Fourth Avenue." and is a very popular grocery store street in Kyoto. Shimbashi - a geisha district in Tokyo. Shimmering Autumn Leaves - a dance piece that Sayuri had thought about performing for the Chairman. Shirae Teahouse - a lower-class teahouse that Dr. Crab frequents. Shirakawa Stream - a stream in Kyoto. Shirakawa (白川) means "white river." Shizue - an elderly geisha who is the mistress of the regional director of the Mitsubishi Bank. She also has a son with the regional director. Shizuoka - a prefecture in Japan where Sayuri stops to wait to board the train to Hakone for the Baron's party. Mr. Snowshowers - one of the first clients of Sayuri as an apprentice geisha. He tries to force Sayuri to drink sake even though she is only fourteen years old when he meets her. His nickname is derived from the fact that he had horrible dandruff. Mr. Sugi - assistant of Tanaka Ichiro. Has one son and a wife, who apparently makes robes for funeral shrouds (this is alluded to on pg. 12 of the newest edition of the book). His son eventually elopes with Satsu, Chiyo's sister, and runs away with her. Sumitomo Bank - a bank in Osaka that featured works of Uchida Kosabura. The paintings were inspired by Sayuri. Sun Yat-Sen - commonly referred to as "The Father of the Republic" in China. He was responsible for the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1912. Suruya Inn - the Inn that General Tottori and Sayuri meet in twice a week to have sex while General Tottori is her patron. General Tottori makes a deal with the mistress of the Inn to save her daughter during the end of World War II. return to the encyclopedia |
