The "Shakuhachi"
The shakuhachi (尺八) is a Japanese bamboo flute. Bamboo is naturally hollow except for nodes which are spaced out at different intervals along the instrument. There are four fingerholes in the front, and another hole in the back for the thumb. It looks a lot like a recorder, but with less note holes.
The instrument takes its name from its standard length of one foot (shaku) and eight (hachi) parts of a foot.
