His name used to be Morohashi Ichiro before his parents both died and his elder brother left him alone in the world. He was adopted by the Tanaka family at the age of 12. He eventually married one of the daughters of the family he was adopted into. Tanaka, Kuniko - the daughter of Tanaka Ichiro, Kuniko is a girl about Chiyo's age at the start of the novel. She has a baby doll named "Taro," who is a boy and is terrified of cockroaches, just like she is. Tatematsu Teahouse - a teahouse that Sayuri and Yasuda Akira meet at while they are lovers. Tatsumi - Mameha's main maid who is hired after Asami is fired for the kimono incident. She is killed by the atomic bomb that is dropped on Nagasaki during World War II. Tatsuyo - the name of the brothel that Satsu, Chiyo's sister is sold to after she is rejected as a purchase in an okiya. The Tatsuyo is in the Migayama-cho district in Kyoto, and is south of Gion, the geisha district. The Twenty Greatest geisha of Gion's Past - an article that Sayuri was given for her 65th birthday by one of her friends. She is listed as being one of the top geisha of her time. The article contains a small bit of information about Sayuri, and almost all of it is false. Toji Temple - a temple in south-west Kyoto that literally means "East Temple." It holds the highest wooden tower in all of Japan. Tomihatsu - the older sister to Hatsuoki and Hatsumomo. Tominaga-cho - a district in Gion in Kyoto where the Minamiza Theatre and the Nitta okiya are located. Toshikazu, Nobu - President of Iwamura Electric. He falls in love with Sayuri even though she is in love with his business partner, Iwamura Ken. He is a war hero who was injured in a bombing outside of Seoul in 1910 during the Japanese occupation of Korea after the Russo-Japanese war. He tried to save his lieutenant officer and when a shell exploded, he took most of the impact and the commanding officer died. As a result, he has hideous scars all over his face, and he is missing one arm. Hatsumomo hates him and calls him "Mr. Lizard." Nobu is very fond of sumo. Sayuri's diary name for him is "Mr. Tsu." Hatsumomo suggests the name "Mr. Blisters." General Tottori Junnosuke - Sayuri's danna. He is the lowest rank of general in the Japanese army. He was in charge of military procurement until World War II turns badly. He is dishonorably discharged from the military and hides away the daughter of the Suruya Inn with his last bit of influence. He does not help Sayuri. He lives out the remainder of his life in the Suruya Inn. tsutsumi (包み) - a small drum that geisha are encouraged to practice for their performances. return to the encyclopedia |
