Sailor Lethe and Mnemosyne

Name(s): Sailor Lethe and Sailor Mnemosyne
Attack: Galatica Mysotis Alpestnis
Appearance: Volume 17, Act 48 (manga only)

The first and only time they appeared on the manga is when Sailor Moon, Sailor Chibichibi, the Starlights, and Princess Kakyuu came to the river that Lethe and Mnemosyne guard - the river surrounding Galaxia's palace. Lethe did not show her face and was covered by a cloak. When Lethe carried them half way across the river, the river turned into sand and the Sailor Senshi fell in. Sailor Moon woke up sitting on a swing and Sailor Lethe was standing infront of her. Lethe was holding Luna, Artemis, and Diana in her hands. She asked if they were Sailor Moon's cats. Usagi didn't remember. Lethe said, "If you raise and care for cats, they'll be lonely when you die. It's much better to be alone, don't you think?" And then she blew the hologram cats up. Usagi tells Lethe that she didn't like being alone and she liked to make many friends. Lethe asked if she had any friends. Usagi still didn't remember. Lethe pointed to the ring on Usagi's fingers and asked if she had a lover. Usagi still didn't remember. They talked for a little more and Lethe almost killed Sailor Moon when Mnemosyne stopped her. Mnemosyne said the name "Sailor Moon" which caused Usagi to remeber who she was and and therefore wake up. The other sailor senshi also woke up and they started to swim out of the river. Kakyuu asked Lethe and Mnemsoyne were the sailor crystals were located and Lethe told them the crystals weren't there. Lethe and Mnemosyne introduced themselves to the Senshi. Lethe once again tried to kill sailor moon and the others, but, yet again, Mnemosyne stopped her and reminded her that they too wanted to find peace and happiness. Lethe believed that is she killed Sailor Moon, the war would end. Sailor Moon heard and told Lethe that if it would end the war, Lethe could kill her. Lethe then said, "Even if we don't repair things, if you die, if you don't die, the war will not end." Sailor Chi and Phi appear on two pillars behind them and say, "Useless fools." They raised their staffs and blast Mnemosyne and Lethe. The two took eachothers hands as their bracelets fell from their wrist. With their last breath, they each utter eachother's name, and vanish.

Mythology
"Lethe" is Greek for "forgetfulness." In Greek mythology, Lethe it is the River of Oblivion, one of the five rivers in Hades. The souls of people would drink from this river to forget their past lives before they were reincarnated. The River Lethe, however, is a real river located west of Mount Katmai, Alakasa Peninsula. Just as a note, Lethe is often alluded to in many works of literature, such as "Ode to a Nightingale" by John Keats. Lethe is often used to show forgetfullness.

Mnemosyne is the goddess of memory, a Titan, in Greek mythology. She was the daughter of Gaia and Uranus and the mother of the Nine Muses. Also in Greek mythology, Mnemosyne is the counterpart river of Lethe. The river is also located in Hades in Greek mythology. Souls supposedly drank from Mnemosyne would remember their life and obtain omniscience.
