Not only is Rei Sailor Mars, but she is also a priestess at Hikawa, a shrine run by her grandfather. Rei came to live with her grandfather when she was very young because her mother died and her father was too busy for her. In general, Rei is calm, however, she can have a pretty nasty temper. Rei is a "strange" young woman who has the ability to sense when something is wrong or essentially see into the future, but only to an extent, by reading the fires or meditating. Two crows named Phobos and Deimos follow her around and keep her company. Also, Rei really doesn't like guys too much (can you blame her?).

Rei first discovered she was Sailor Mars a short while after meeting Usagi. Usagi was visiting the temple to investigate the mysterious disappearance of students on the 6:00 bus at Sendai Hill. Phobos and Deimos attacked Usagi and this led Rei to think Usagi was an evil spirit, so Rei tried to exocise her. When Rei was reading the fire later that day she saw Jadeite attacking Usagi. Rei quickly boarded (or was forced to board, actually) the 6:00 bus. Usagi saw the bus vanish and followed and Ami later joined Usagi. Rei was grabbed by Jadeite and after a struggle, the Mars sign appeared on her forehead. Rei transforms into Sailor Mars, Phobos and Deimos appear and attack Jadeite, and Rei kills Jadeite with her attack "Aku Ryo Tai San." Sailor Mars controls fire.

Mythology
Mars is the Roman version of the Greek god, Ares. Mars/Ares is the god of war. Before heading out to battle, Romans would pray and give sacrifices to Mars for victory. Mars is often shown with a shield - this shield supposedly fell from the sky to save the Romans. Mars is often associated with the male gender.

Rei's astrological sign is Aries. Aries tend to be very ambitious and great leaders and try to accomplish everything they start. Because they are this way, they tend to be aggresive and forceful. In relationships, Aries are direct and passionate. Those born under the sign of Aries are adventurous, courageous, dynamic, confident, selfish, tempered, and impulsive. The ruling planet for Aries is, of course, Mars.

Phobos and Deimos
As mentioned before, Rei has two crows that follow her around: Phobos and Deimos. Phobos and Deimos are the names of the the two moons that satellite Mars. In Greek mythology, Phobos and Deimos are sons of Ares - both by Aphrodite, the goddess of love. Deimos means "dread" and Phobos means "fright." Both Phobos and Deimos accompanied Ares into battle, like Phobos and Deimos the crows often follow Sailor Mars into battle.

Phobos and Deimos only appear in their "human" form in the manga. In Volume 12, Act 36 Phobos and Deimos appear to Rei when Rei is struggling in a fight against Tiger-Eye and the Dead Moon Circus. Rei is stuck in the Mirror House at the Circus. Phobos and Deimos give Rei the Mars crystal that helps her transform into Super Sailor Mars. Phobos wears red while Deimos wears purple.
